Hindu kelimesi asli ındus Nehri bolgesini temelli eden farsca kokenli bir kelimedir. Daha sonra Iskender sahillerde yasayan bu insanlara 'indus hindus' der.
Bununla birlikte daha Iskender Hindistan'a gelmeden evvel Hinduzmin var olasindan cok uzun sure once eski bir uygarlik Indus'un kiyisindan boy verir.
Arastirmacilar bu ucuk Indus Vadisi medeniyeyi hakkinda cok az bilgiye sahiptir ama biliyorlar ki tipki eski Misir ve Mezapotamya uygarliklari gibi bu uygarlik da nehir kenarina kurulu oldugu icin gelismistir. Bu medeniyet M.O 3000-1500 yillari arasinda 750.000 mil kareyi kapladi sonra aniden kayboldu.Buranin iki buyuk sehrinde Mohenje-Dari ve Harapa yaklasik 80.000 sakin barinmistir. Caddeler dogu-bati/kuzey-guney yonunde serilmistir. Vatandaslar kanalizasyon sistemlerinin belediyeye ait su kaynaklarinin ve hatta umumi cop yiginlarinin tadini cikartmistir. Her sey o kdar tek tiptir ki evlerin insa edildigi tuglalarinin boyu bile aynidir.
