11 Ocak 1903 tarihinde Güney Afrika'da doğdu, yazarlığı yanında sıkı bir Apartheid karşıtı eylemciydi. 1928 yılında evlendi ve eşi 1967 yılında ölene kadar beraber yaşadılar. İlk evliliğinden iki çocuğu oldu daha sonrasında 1969'da Anna Hopkins ile evlendi ölene kadar da evli kaldı. 12 Nisan 1988'de hayatını kaybetti.
